Graphic design is an art and academic field whose activity primarily consists in designing visual communications meant to transmit certain message to various social groups with defined objectives. The message to be conveyed may be in the form of words or images, or both. It involves the use of colors, texts, fonts, figures, and so on to create and produce quality visual communication that effectively adheres to the communicative norms of a certain society or industry. As communication technology advances, the scope of graphic design broadens to include the production of advertising materials, logos, brochures, business cards, posters, web pages, banners, and other types of graphic materials. The practice of graphic designing has become so diversified that it is now practiced by many different kinds of industries and professions. For example, graphic designers are found in newspapers, magazines, publishing houses, advertising agencies, film and TV production companies, and art museums. In addition, they are found in universities, medical centers, computer design studios, government agencies, printing houses, and universities. Thus, it is not surprising to find graphic designers in so many places.

The practice of graphic design had its humble beginnings during the Renaissance. It evolved as an important part of book creation in order to reproduce the text in legible format. During this time, architects, artists, and writers relied on visual communication to make their works understandable to readers. This gave birth to the concept of typography, which is still an essential component of graphic design. Even today, a highly creative designer is still able to use typography to communicate complex ideas.

A major challenge for any visual designer is making user interface graphic designs. User interface is a design technique that refers to the appearance and function of a graphical interface, such as a mouse pointer, a keyboard, or a screen. User interface graphic design deals with ensuring that everything within a program is clear and easy to use. However, the definition of “user interface” varies across different disciplines. A UI designer may be asked to design a user interface in a programming language like C++, where the focus is more on implementation details than on aesthetics.

Another facet of visual identity graphic design deals with creating a brand identity. A brand identity is basically the unique visual representation of a company. In terms of branding, it includes all visual aspects of a brand, such as logo, packaging, advertisements, television, etc. Creating a brand identity, graphic design can be challenging, as a company needs to consider both technical and non-technical issues, such as cost, profitability, and potential market penetration.

Typography is an aspect of graphic design that is quite challenging because it requires a high level of creativity and a special knowledge of the English language. A typographer is a person who create typeface, scripts, and layouts, and uses them to create letterheads, business cards, advertisements, etc. The role of the typographer is often very small compared to other creative positions in a company, but a successful typographer is integral to the success of any business.
